Abstract

382,465. Steam engines. AKTIEBOLAGET GOTAVERKEN, and JOHANSSON, J. E., 25, Olivedalsgatan, both in Gothenburg, Sweden. Dec. 24, 1931, No. 35739. [Class 122 (iii).] In a multiple expansion engine, the exhaust from any one of the cylinders is compressed in a single-stage compresser driven by a turbine driven by the low-pressure cylinder exhaust, and is fed to the inlet or the receiver of the same cylinder. In compressing the low-pressure exhaust steam, a turbo-compresser is used ; in compressing the intermediate pressure cylinder exhaust, a reciprocating-pump, driven through gearing from the turbine, is used. The compressed steam may be superheated. In the construction shown in the Figure, the turbine 8 operates the compresser 12 which takes lowpressure steam from the cylinder 4 through pipe 14 and passes it through pipe 15 to the lowpressure inlet. The turbine may be put out of action and the low-pressure exhaust passed to the condenser 10. The compresser may be fed with steam at the pressure of the exhaust lead which is led past a non-return valve 24 into a container 25, or the steam may be drawn off through a positively-actuated valve from the low-pressure cylinder during expansion; a container similar to the container 25 may be used. Feedwater may be heated in stages by steam tapped through branches 20, 21, 22. In a modification, a geared reciprocating-pump passes steam from the intermediate pressure exhaust through a superheater to the intermediate supply.
