[Class 7 (i)] [See also Group XXVIII] To facilitate the starting of a direct-acting motor-compressor delivering air or a mixture air and combustion products, the motor-compressor delivers to a receiver 12 which can be connected at will either to a main pipe 14 delivering to a turbine &c., or (at starting) to an auxiliary low-pressure pipe 16 which may be open to atmosphere. Fig. 1 shows the compressor comprising cylinders 2 delivering compressed air through a pipe 7 and ports 8 to the combustion space 3, which exhausts through ports 10 to the receiver 12, which can be connected to either of the pipes 14, 16 by valves 13, 15. Alternatively, part of the compressed air may be delivered direct to the receiver. Fig. 2 shows apparatus in which a manual valve 20 controls communication of the receiver with the low-pressure main 16, while communication with the main 14 is controlled by a valve 19 carrying a plunger 21 working in a cylinder having oil supply and discharge ports controlled by a piston 32 subject on its faces to the pressures in compressor delivery pipe and the supply main 14. The valve 20 may alternatively be controlled in accordance with the fuel supply to the compressor or with its end-ofstroke positions. In a modification, a single valve may control the two conduits 14, 16.
