Abstract

479,518. Free - piston compressors. PESCARA, R. P. June 3, 1936, No. 15576. Convention date, June 3, 1935. [Class 8 (i)] Combustion in a space 1 actuates pistons by which air is compressed in spaces 3<1>, this air being supplied for scavenging and combustion to the space 1 from the storage cylinder 5 ; the scavenging air and gases of combustion are supplied to a turbine &c. The pistons are returned by the energy stored in the clearance spaces and an additional source such as pressure in cushions 101 or vacuum in spaces 11<1>. The pressure in the combustion space is maintained between limits set by the strength of the materials and the pressure necessary for combustion by choice of dimensions especially of piston diameters, by the positions of the engine inlet and outlet ports, and by determination of the additional energies. These energies may be influenced by varying the maximum or minimum pressures or varying the clearance volumes of the cushioning spaces, or the compressor inlet pressure may be varied. Fig. 5 shows apparatus wherein the maximum and minimum pressures of the cushions 10 are varied by pressure on the valves 16, 17 conveyed through links and levers from a hydraulic cylinder, the slide valve 22 of which is controlled by the engine pressure. Alternatively, this cylinder may control the clearance in vacuum space 11, by a piston 20. The return energy may be increased at starting by provision of a stop 37 for the rod 19 acting in the valves which stop is released by heat-actuated bellows 36 when normal working is attained.
