Abstract
508,212. Free-piston compressors. PESCARA, R. P. Dec. 31, 1937, No. 36290. Convention date, Jan. 7. [Class 8 (i)] A free-piston compressor or combustion gas generator comprises a double - acting compressor piston 4 connected to the engine piston 2 by a rod of less diameter that of the engine piston ; the return stroke is effected by a pneumatic cushion 11 and by connecting the compressedair receiver with a space 8 bounded by the outer face S<3> of the engine piston. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the cushioning spaces 15<1> are formed in the piston rod fed from hollow stationary pistons 16<1> which act as starting devices. The piston rod has a packing disc 14<1> which prevents escape of gas through ports 10 at the inner end of the stroke. Each piston &c. is guided by a single slipper 26<1>, 26<2> coacting with a removable slideway. A piston 30 subjected to compressed air moves the parts into starting position. The fuel pump is actuated by a cam 32 connected with a lever 38. A roller 37 adjusted by a piston 40 subject to the feed pressure of the engine regulates the injection point.
