Abstract
434,921. Direct-acting air compressors. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. March 8, 1935, No. 7266. Convention date, March 13, 1934. [Class 8 (i)] A compressor comprises a pair of pistons 2, 3 enclosing between them a space 12 in which internal combustion effects the outstroke, while the instroke is effected by combustion in auxiliary spaces 15 in which extensions 20 of the pistons 2, 3 move, the air being compressed by enlargements 7 on the pistons. Links 13, 14 synchronize the pistons. In a modification two such systems are d i sposed side by side, the second system having pistons linked only to those of the first. Fig. 4 shows a stabilizer in which the oscillating link 13 between the pistons actuates a valve 64 in accordance with variations in the piston stroke and so varies the pressure of oil acting on a piston 69 subject to the pressure of the supercharging air for the central combustion space and of a spring; this piston moves a spindle 70, e.g. to increase the fuel supply to the auxiliary cylinders.
