Abstract
488,319. Cylinders. GEISSLINGER, R., and GREINER, K. R. April 16, 1937, No. 10928. [Class 7 (ii)] The shocks of compression and explosion are relieved by an auxiliary piston 3 which is subject to two substantially constant gaseous pressures, acting on it in succession, and approximating to the maximum compression and explosion pressures respectively; in a modification, Fig. 4, two separate auxiliary pistons 25, 26 are each subject to the respective gaseous pressures. Gas at an adjustable pressure corresponding to the cylinder compression pressure is admitted to the back of the piston 3 from a pressureaccumulator through a jacket C and port 20. The piston 3 is connected to a further piston 4, loaded by gas at an adjustable pressure corresponding to explosion pressure, by a connecting link 7 and a crank 6, which is pulled off its dead-centre by a light spring, and which when reversed causes the two pistons to move in unison. A toggle connection 11, 12, pressed sideways by a cam 17 and light spring 19 also steadies the return of the pistons on the expansion stroke ; the part 11 is pivoted to a beam 10 one end of which is adjustable to alter the lowest position of the pistons 3, 4. In Fig. 4, the pistons 25, 26 are subject, respectively, to gas at explosion and compression pressure ; nuts 34, 35 and stops 36, 37 limit the travel of the pistons but oil dash-pots or air cushions may be provided to limit shocks. Alternatively this may be effected by devices similar to the crank and rod 6, 7, or the toggle 11, 12, Fig. 1. Each piston 25, 26 may be duplicated.
