538,279. Actuating air &c. compressors. FRANKFURTER MASCHINENBAU-AKT.- GES. Jan. 24, 1940, No. 1444. Convention date, Jan. 25, 1939. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] In an engine having opposed pistons 3, 4, working in each cylinder 2 and connected to a common crankshaft 28 through levers 22, 23 and rods 26, 27 the engine piston 3 which controls the exhaust port 5 is connected to a compressor piston 9, while the other engine piston 4 is connected to a scavenging-pump piston 10. As shown in Fig. 1, each compressor or pump piston is carried by the rod of the engine piston which is connected by a link 20 or 21 to the lever 22 or 23. In modifications, (a) the engine and pump piston-rods 29, 30 are pivotally connected at 31, Fig. 2, to the levers 22, 23; (b) the engine and pump pistons are relatively offset and the piston-rods 29, 30, Fig. 3, are connected to the levers 22, 23 at different points, so that the pump pistons have a shorter stroke than the engine pistons ; (c) stage compressors are employed, the lowpressure pistons being connected to the outer ends of the levers 22 and the high-pressure pistons to points near the pivots of the levers ; (d) integral engine pistons 33, 35 and compressor and pump pistons 34, 36, Fig. 4, are pivotally connected at 39, 40 to the levers 37, 38 which are pivoted at 41, 42 upon levers 43, 44 turning on a pivot 45, mounted on an adjustable eccentric or on separate pivots.
