[Class 8 (i)] [See also Group XXVI] In a compressor of the type in which pistons 5, 8, reciprocating oppositely in an internal-combustion cylinder 2 carry the pistons 7, 9 of compressor cylinders 3, 4, excessive outward movement of the pistons is prevented by limiting the maximum delivery of the fuel-injection pump of the cylinder 2 in accordance with the pressure in the discharge pipe 17 of the compressors 3, 4, or the pressure in the exhaust pipe of the cylinder 2. The outer ends of the cylinders 3, 4, deliver air to the pipe 17, while the inner ends supply scavenging air to the ports 10 of the cylinder 2. The discharge of the fuel-injection pump 20, Fig. 2, is controlled by means of a spill valve 25, which is opened by a projection 26 on a lever 27. The latter is operated by a link from a lever 29 which carries a roller interposed between the operating cam and the pump plunger. The lever 27 is pivoted on an eccentric 31 on a spindle 30, which can be adjusted by the governor 33 through a lever 32, link 34 and a cylinder 35, containing a piston 36 moving against the action of a spring 37. The outward movement of the lever 32 is limited by a stop 38 formed by one arm of a lever, the other arm of which is operated by a piston 40, exposed through a pipe 19 to the pressure in the discharge pipe 17.
