Abstract
499,308. Pneumatic power transmission. JORGENSEN, O. E. June 17, 1937, No. 16862. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 20, 1937.] [Class 8 (ii)] Air compressed by a compressor O is delivered to a high-pressure tank B and thence to air motors A, the exhaust of which passes in normal working through a low-pressure tank C and cooler U back to the compressor. The compressor may be regulated automatically to maintain a constant pressure difference between the two tanks until the maximum output of the compressor is reached, after which a valve N opens to admit the air into an expansion tank H. After the peak load, the air is returned from the tank H by opening a valve V and starting an auxiliary compressor P, delivering either to the high-pressure or the low-pressure tank. The valves N, V are dependent on the load on the main compressor and the pressure in the expansion tank or the difference between the latter and that in the low-pressure chamber by a governor acting mechanically or through an oil-driven servomotor on a lever 2, 3. Pistons 4, 5 having areas such that at the normal pressures in the low-pressure and expansion tanks the pistons assume their lowest position, coact with the valves to determine the destination of air flow.
