Abstract

490,893. Engines using liquid hydrogen. BELDIMANO, A., and MANZOLINI, E. Dec. 29, 1937, No. 36019. [Class 7 (ii)] Liquid hydrogen is evaporated and introduced under its own pressure intc a working cylinder at or near the end of the compression stroke of a compression ignition engine. Liquefied hydrogen is pumped from a heat-insulated vessel 1 into an evaporating coil 5 which is heated by an exhaust pipe 6, a cooling water pipe or by the atmosphere and then conveyed to an inlet valve 7 operated by a cam 7<11> on a shaft 13. The radius of the coil 5 decreases towards the end at which the hydrogen is discharged so that the cooling of the exhaust pipe is not too great at any one position. Alternatively, the radius of the coil may be constant, heatinsulating material of different thickness being inserted between the coil and the exhaust pipe. The hydrogen may enter the induction pipe through a pipe 10.
