Abstract
568,685. Starting. VIALE, S. M. Oct. 11, 1943, No. 16634. [Classes 7 (i) and 7 (v)] A starting device for an internal-combustion engine comprises an explosive cartridge 18, the gases from which are diluted by steam or other inert vapour, whereby the temperature and pressure are reduced and the volume increased, the gaseous mixture being then utilised in an auxiliary engine 19 by which the main engine is started. The delivery pipe 12 from the cartridge chamber is preferably lined with heat-insulating material 13 and has a choke portion 15 fitted with a jet 16 extending into a closed water chamber 14. The pipe 12 is vented to chamber 14 through a pipe 17. When the cartridge is ignited; the combustion gases draw water from chamber 14, this water being converted into steam forming a mixture which may be delivered to a radial engine 19 having piston - controlled exhaust ports 26. The inlet valves 22 are operated by the pistons 21 to deliver mixture to the next preceding cylinder, Fig. 2, which has passed dead-centre. The engine. 19 is coupled to the load by reduction gear 28 and dog clutch 29. In a modification, the starting engine may have cam-operated inlet valves, and in a further modification, Fig. 4, the engine may be a turbine unit comprising an impulse wheel 36 operating the dogs 39 through epicyclic reduction gear 37.
