[Class 7 (ii)] [See also Group XXVI] In an engine or turbine in which a combustible mixture is ignited in a chamber 3, from which the gases are transferred to the working space of the engine or turbine, the chamber 3 is in constant communication through a nozzle 5 with the working space and means is provided for introducing the combustible mixture into the chamber at one end and extracting it at the other end at a rate at least equal to the rate of inflow, suddenly stopping the extraction to produce a rise of pressure in the chamber, and simultaneously igniting the mixture. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, combustible mixture from a supply conduit 2 is discharged tangentially into the chamber 3 by a compressor 1. A second compressor 7 has its suction conduit 6 opening tangentially into the upper end of the chamber 3 and circulates the combustible mixture through a conduit 8 to the inlet conduit 2 of the compressor 1. A valve 9 in the conduit 6, operated by hand or other means, is preferably connected to means for switching on an ignition plug 10. On closing the valve 9 and effecting ignition in the chamber 3, the resulting compression surge drives the explosion gases into the engine cylinder or turbine. In a modification, a single compressor is connected to conduits such as 4, 6 to circulate the mixture through the chamber 3.
