Abstract
509,882. Generating combustion products under pressure. SZILVAY, K. Oct. 19, 1938, No. 30262. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] In an arrangement for generating compressed products of combustion for use as inert extinguishing gases, a combustible mixture is ignited during its compression in a compressor cylinder 1 and during the remainder of the compression stroke is transferred through a valve 5 into a combustion chamber 6 in which the combustion is continued and completed. In one form, Fig. 1, the compressor piston 2 is actuated by an internal-combustion engine (not shown) and a mechanically actuated inlet valve 3 is supplied from a carburettor 4 with combustible mixture, which may be forced into the cylinder 1 by a compressor 13. Ignition in the cylinder is effected by a spark and the pressure of combustion opens the exhaust valve 5 against the adjustable pressure of a spring 8. Further combustible mixture is supplied to the combustion chamber 6 by a carburettor 11 and compressor 10. The cylinder 1 and chamber 6 are water-jacketed. Exhaust gases from the engine driving the compressor may be introduced into the chamber 6 or mixed with the gas issuing from the outlet 7. In a modification, Fig. 2, burning gases exhausted from a cylinder such as 1, Fig. 1, pass to the combustion chamber 6 through a tube 16 traversing a separate combustion chamber 15 ; combustible mixture is supplied to the chamber 15 by a carburettor 11 and compressor 10 and is ignited by the hot tube 16.
