Abstract

232,603. Gerber, W. April 15, 1924, [Convention date]. Non-electric ignition.- Ignition is effected by compressing a small portion of combustible mixture from the engine cylinder in a chamber 6 by means of a differential piston 3 actuated by the compression pressure. Mixture enters the chamber 6 when the differential piston 3 is at the top of its stroke through a passage 4, which is sealed by the piston at the commencement of the downstroke. When under the influence of high pressure and temperature ignition has taken place in the chamber 6, the motion of the piston 3 is reversed, and the ignited gases force the piston 3 back to the top of its stroke, and pass to the combustion chamber through the passage 4. The time of ignition may be controlled by a screw 10, which bears upon the top of a diaphragm 8 mounted in proximity to a perforated plate 7, and by bending the diaphragm throttles the passage 5 through which the compression pressure is communicated to the upper side of the differential piston.
