Abstract
468,390. Rotary engines. DREHKOLBEN-KRAFTMASCHINEN GES. Jan. 2, 1936, No. 205. Convention date, Jan. 4, 1935. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotary engine with an external combustion chamber b has a burner c supplied with gas, or fuel which may be coal dust or oil, or a mixture of the two, and air which is delivered by a blower to an inlet g and afterwards compressed by vanes a<1> through a port a<3> into the chamber b. The gases are delivered through a port a' and expand against the vanes a<1>, and are exhausted by way of a port which is opposite to the port g. In a second arrangement the burner opens into a pipe within the chamber b so that only part of the incoming air enters the pipe or combustion space, the remainder of the air passing around the pipe and fanning the burning gases before entering the engine chamber. A further method involves use of a cyclone separator placed between the burner and the port a<4>, to separate ashes and other impurities from the gases. A modification of the engine shown in Fig. 1 describes a piston control of the air compression in which a number of ports communicate between the working chamber and the atmosphere. One or more of these ports may be uncovered by lifting the piston. Fig. 7 shows a piston o which controls two passages p which admit working fluid from the combustion chamber b to the engine chamber. When the piston is moved to open one or both passages p, it closes one or both of passages p<1>, so that with a greater charge admission, there is greater expansion. A still further arrangement has two casings a2 connected together by a common combustion chamber b. In a modification one casing a<2> acts as a compressor only, and the second casing, connected with the former by a combustion chamber is an engine. The engine may be reversible.
