Abstract

606,614. Cylinders. JENNINGS, H. W. K. (Fisher, B. C.). Jan. 16, 1946, No. 1558. [Class 7 (ii)] High pressures in the combustion chambers, likely to cause detonation, are relieved by small leakage paths past packing rings 40, located round fixed plugs 30. The high pressure gases leak to chambers 26, connected together and past a non-return valve 47. The number of rings 40 and the spring pressure on the valve 47 are selected so that the leakage is just sufficient to prevent detonation. In a modification, the valve 47 is replaced by cup-leather washers on the plugs, and the leaking gases are used to actuate a turbine, which drives a fan receiving air from a scoop behind the radiator fan and delivering it to the carburetter.
