Abstract

1, 096, 884. Generating steam from internal combustion engine exhaust gases. J. E. KEDDIE Dec. 13, 1965 [Dec. 12, 1964], No.50710/64. Headings F1B and F1Q. An engine comprises means for directing exhaust gases from a first working chamber 1 to a second working chamber 2, the inlet stroke of the second chamber substantially coinciding with the exhaust stroke of the first chamber, and means for admitting water into the second working chamber after compression of the exhaust gases therein, so that during use of the engine the water is vapourized by the heat of the exhaust gases. The resulting steam is used to power a working operation. The water inlet valve 8 may be operated in timed relation to the main inlet and exhaust valves of the second chamber or may discharge water into the second chamber on the pressure in this chamber reaching a predetermined value. Separate lubrication systems are provided for the internal-combustion and steam cylinders. The coolant from a jacket about the internalcombustion cylinder may be circulated to a jacket about the steam cylinder. The engine may comprise a plurality of internal-combustion chambers and a plurality of steam chambers. The internalcombustion and steam portions of the engine may be virtually mechanically independent except for the means for ensuring the proper timing relationship between the two portions.
