Abstract
1,081,499. Combined internal combustion engine and hot air engine. M. W. SAUNDERS. Feb. 9, 1966, No. 5636/66. Headings F1Q and F1S. A combined internal-combustion engine and hot air engine comprises juxtaposed alternate cylinders for the internal-combustion cycle 1, 2 and the hot air cycle 3, and heat from the internal combustion cylinder is transferred to the cool air charge in the hot air cylinder. The cool air charge in the hot air cylinder is compressed into a jacket surrounding the internal-combustion cylinder. The exhaust gases from the internal-combustion cylinder are passed through a heat exchanger 10 situated within the head of the hot air cylinder 3. The hot air cylinder charge may include water in the form of vapour or fine droplets. The flow of air into and out of the heat exchangers 8, 9, 10 may be such that it leaves by the same channels that it enters or it may leave by different channels as indicated by the arrows 18, with the aid of valves 19. The engine may be of spark ignition or compression ignition type.
