Abstract

326,794. Rowse, L. J., and Clarke, J. Dec. 15, 1928. Water, supplying to cylinders.-Provision is made for the injection of cooling jacket water or steam into the cylinder of an internalcombustion engine immediately before ignition takes place, an automaticallyoperated valve being employed to put the jacket space into communication with the e combustion space only when the pressure in the jacket exceeds the compression pressure. Two ball valves A and B are housed in a common duct and are forced apart against their seats by a spring 4. The valve B is actuated in timed relation to the crank-shaft by a rocker 10 and push-rods 11 and 14, whilst the valve A is spring- loaded to remain closed until the pressure on the side communicating with the jacket exceeds that admitted to the duct on the opening of the valve B. The heating of the jacket water may be assisted by the provision of tubes in the jacket through which the exhaust gases are passed. The length of the tube 5 leading from the jacket may be such that steam only is admitted to the cylinder; the water level in the jacket is maintained constant, by unspecified means, a replenishment tank being provided.
