Abstract
403,846. Fuel-injection pumps. SOC. D'ETUDES ET D'EXPLOITATION DU GENERATEUR A PISTON LIBRE, 33, Rue Liogier, St. Etienne, Loire, France. March 27, 1933, No. 9162. Convention date, March 30, 1932. [Class 102 (i).] A fuel-injection pump is operated by the expansion of liquid under highpressure. The pump plunger 15, Fig. 1, discharging through an injecter 4 is formed integral with an operating piston 17. The injection stroke is effected by the instantaneous expansion of liquid in a chamber 6, which is admitted to the right-hand face of the piston 17 by a mechanically-operated valve 8. The suction stroke is effected against the action of a spring 19 by the pressure in the chamber 6 constantly acting on an annular surface 16, the righthand surface of the piston 17 being opened to exhaust by a mechanically-operated valve 11. The left-hand surface of the piston 17 is open to atmosphere through a passage 12. In a modification the spring 19 is replaced by compressed liquid acting on the rod of the piston 17, make-up liquid being supplied through a return passage by an extension of the piston 17 acting as a pump plunger. In a further modification, Figs. 5-7, the injection stroke is effected by compressed liquid in a chamber 53 acting on the right-hand end 47 of a piston 64, the left-hand end 46 being alternately connected to a high-pressure supply passage 62<1> and to an exhaust passage 55<1> by a mechanically-operated valve 51. Make up liquid is supplied to the chamber 53 by a valve 37, which at low-pressure is moved by a spring 41 to connect the chamber 47 to the highpressure supply 62<1> by means of a passage 36 and grooves 42 in the valve. Excess pressure moves the valve against the action of the spring 41 to open passages 43 to atmosphere.
