Abstract

207,862. Rezsny, K., Halasz, E. v., and Paulini, A. Sept. 5, 1922. Engines working on special systems or cycles. -In an engine using superheated steam, the exhaust is discharged through a liquid and then compressed to the pressure in the superheater into which it is discharged. Alternatively, the steam to be compressed for the next cycle may be supplied by a surface condenser in which the exhaust steam of the preceding cycle has been condensed. The compression may be effected in the cylinder itself, if the engine is a reciprocating engine, or in a compressor in one or two stages. The engine may work on a two or four stroke cycle. In the four-stroke cycle engine, Fig. 1, steam at atmospheric pressure and at 100‹ C. is sucked past valve 2 from vessel 6. It is then forced at about 40 atmospherics through chambers 9, 12, and coil 10 wherein it is heated to about 700‹ C. The power stroke is effected with expansion on opening valve 14. The return, exhaust stroke is effected on opening valve 2, and the steam passed into the water in vessel 6 through a perforated pipe 15. The separated oil is let off by pipe 20, fresh water being supplied by pipe 21. Fresh steam is drawn into the cylinder through pipes 4, 3 past valves 18, 2. By using a double-ended cylinder with transverse ports and compression and expansion in opposite ends, the engine is worked on a twostroke cycle. The compressed steam scavenges the cylinder, which may be double-acting, in which case the fresh steam is prepared in a separate compressor. Steam may be taken from another engine instead of the vessel 6. In the turbine plant, Fig. 3, superheated steam enters at 29 and the exhaust passes to the reservoir 6 from which steam is transferred to the superheater by a single or multiple compressor which may be turbo-compressor on the main shaft. A construction is described wherein the exhaust from a reciprocating engine is used in a fourstroke engine. A part of the power cylinder 1 may be cooled. The chamber 6, Fig. 1, might comprise a condenser with pressure below the atmosphere and the suction may be effected from steam above atmospheric pressure. Starting may be effected by injecting water or steam into the superheater, or by using an auxiliary boiler.
