Combined fluid-actuated and mechanical gears ; beat or lift valves; cylinders, valves co-axial with and moving over ports in.--A bell-like lift valve k controlling the admission and exhaust is arranged co-axial with and at the end of the cylinder, and works between a seat m on the cylinder and an enlargement q on a hollow ported exhaust stem o. The end of the valve is subjected constantly to fluid pressure supplied by passages h, s, u, t; and is intermittently put to exhaust by a passage v, passage y and port z on a sleeve adjustable to vary the cut-off or effect reversa , and a valve member forming the end of the crank-shaft.
