Abstract

396,396. Multipleexpansion steam engines. CLARK, Ltd., G. and CLARK, G., Southwick Engine Works, Sunderland. Dec. 2, 1931, No. 33431. [Classes 122 (ii) and 122 (iii).] Double-acting multiple-expansion engines of Woolf construction working on the counterflow principle, are provided with three or more stages of expansion, and have piston, lift, or other reciprocating valves having no internal steam passages, or combinations of these, controlling the steam' distribution. The cranks of the high and intermediate stages are at 180‹, and the cranks of the intermediate and lowpressure cylinders, or of the first and second intermediate cylinders, are arranged at 90‹. In the four-cylinder, triple-expansion engine shown in the Figure, the H.P. and I.P. cylinders are controlled by a piston valve 1 without internal passages ; similarly the two lowpressure cylinders are controlled by a single piston valve 10. The two valve-chests are connected by a steam transfer pipe 8. A modification is described comprising a quadruple expansion engine with two pairs of cylinders, each pair working on the Woolf principle and controlled by a single piston valve. In a further modification, a three-cylinder tripleexpansion engine is described wherein a flat slide valve controls the low-pressure cylinder.
