Valves. - A double-acting four-stroke-cycle engine with four cylinders in two tandem pairs is controlled by concentric sleeve and piston valves working in two auxiliary cylinders. Fig. 5 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 a developed vertical section. The working cylinders A<1>, B<1>, C<1>, D<1> have pistons A, B connected to opposed cranks, and the valve-cylinders E, F contain sleeves G and piston valves H operated by eccentrics about 90 degrees apart on a half-speed shaft. Each pair of valves controls admission and exhaust for the upper part of two working cylinders and the lower part of the other two cylinders. The inlet pipes are connected to annular spaces E<1>, E<3> around the valve cylinders, and the exhaust pipes communicate with annular spaces E<2>, and with axial passages J in the piston valves. In a modified form of valve, the exhaust passage J extends the whole length of the valve, and the three annular spaces E<1>, E<2>, E<3> are all connected to the inlet pipes.
