25,411. Howitt, J. M. Nov. 25. Gas and like engines.-The distribution of the motive fluid in a four-stroke-cycle engine is controlled by a pair of piston valves working. in valvechests which are always open to the combustion chamber; one valve assists in the compression, and the other acts as a working piston during the explosion stroke. In the engine shown in Fig. 1, piston valves h, j, driven by cranks or eccentrics, control inlet and exhaust ports f, respectively formed in liners b, b<1>. The liners are waterjacketed and have conical seatings to engage corresponding seatings on.the cylinder casting, and the exhaust lining has passages for cooling-water in the metal between the exhaust ports. In a modification two tandem cylinders with a differential piston are arranged to operate with a common inlet valve and also with a common exhaust valve.
