Abstract

24,642. Bogert, J. L. Nov. 14 Gas and like engines.-To facilitate starting, to prevent pre-ignition, and to regulate the power developed by gas and oil engines suitable for motorcar and ship propulsion, an adjustable piston 10, or other mechanical means, is arranged at the head of the cylinder to vary the compression space. The piston, which may be water-cooled, may be adjusted by the hand-wheel shown in Fig. 7, or by the worm gearing shown in Fig. 5. If preferred, the piston may be arranged in a separate cylinder, situated in any convenient position, and in open communication with the working cylinder. The adjustable piston or plunger may also be operated by water pressure. When the engine, which may work on a two- or four-stroke compression cycle, is running normally, the charge is ignited by the projection 17, the heat of which is maintained by the combustion of the charge. Fig. 7 shows an arrangement for discharging a portion of the ignited charge into a second cylinder 1<x>. The ordinary cycle of operations takes place in the cylinder 1, while air alone is drawn into and compressed in the larger cylinder 1<x>. When the charge is ignited in the cylinder 1, a portion of the products is led into the cylinder 1<x> through the valve 22, and acts upon the piston 2<a>, which is connected to a crank set at an angle of 45 degrees in advance of the crank to which the piston 2 is connected. The larger cylinder inlet and exhaust valves are shown at 25 and 7 respectively.
