Abstract
153,913. Muchka, J. Sept. 24, 1915, [Convention date]. Combustion-product plant.--An internal-combustion engine is employed as a generator of products of combustion, for use as a protective inert gas in the storage of inflammable liquids. Part of the exhaust gases from the engine cylinder a escape during the latter part of the expansion stroke through a mechanically-actuated valve k to a pipe m, and the rest of the exhaust escapes through the ordinary exhaust valve d to the atmosphere during the exhaust stroke. In the event of a missfire, the pressure in the cylinder a does not rise sufficiently to allow the unburnt gases to enter the pipe m when the valve k is open. The gases admitted to the pipe m pass through a cooler n and a purifier (not shown) to the inlet valve h of a pump e driven from the engine shaft. From the pump e the gases pass through a pipe j to a storage vessel. In a modification, the pump cylinder is in line with the engine cylinder a, the pump piston being a reduced extension of the power piston.
