Abstract

14,414. Jaubert, G. F. Feb. 26, [Convention date]. Two-stroke-cycle engines; materials, actuating. - The invention relates to working a closed-circuit Diesel or other engine during the period of submersion of a submarine, and consists in economizing the supply of oxygen by the use of carbonic acid gas, which is stated both to supply oxygen for combustion and to act as a diluent. The invention also has for its object the reduction of the quantity of incondensable products in the exhaust gases. The two-strokecycle engine shown in the Figure comprises a working cylinder b and a pump a which, when the vessel is submerged, withdraws combustion products through condensers and purifiers q, t and delivers them to a reservoir h for scavenging. Liquid fuel is sprayed by carbonic acid gas through a valve c ; and oxygen for forming a comburent with the scavenging - charge of carbonic acid gas, admitted through a valve g, is delivered by a pump through a valve l. The combustion products, which are stated to contain carbon, water, and carbonic acid gas, are discharged through a port m, being delivered to purifiers q, t, which extract the water and carbon and deliver purified carbonic acid gas to the pump a. A pump y discharges gases delivered through a relief valve x. When the vessel is awash, valves f, k, p, z are actuated by a hand-lever 1 to place the pipe e in communication with a compressed air supply and to open the pump j, exhaust port m and pump a to the atmosphere. If preferred, the fuel may be ignited by compressed air when working submerged, in which case a' small quantity of nitrogen is exhausted with the combustion products.
