Abstract

3325. Claudel, H., and Hopkinson, W. Feb. 15. Gas and explosive-vapour engines.-In a twostroke cycle engine, air and gas or oil are drawn into the lower part of the cylinder through valves P, M, and gauze Q, and are mixed by a perforated disc or turbine wheel Q<1>, preferably on the spindle of the valve M. The admission and exhaust ports are tangential, so that, as the charge enters the cylindrical cavity in the cover H, it receives a whirling motion which further tends to mix it and arrange it in stratified layers. After the exhaust port R is closed, a layer of burnt gases is left on the piston, which tends to beat the new charge. The igniting-points I enter a cavity in the head of the valve L, when it rises to admit a new charge, and are protected against the deposition of oil.
