Abstract

620. Froehlich, W. Jan. 14. Two-stroke-cycle engines; driving-gear.-An engine having a number of parallel cylinders arranged around a central shaft 2, and in which oppositely-moving pistons actuate a pair of wobbling rings 6, compresses scavenging-air and combustible mixture in the closed ends x, y respectively of each cylinder. Combustible mixture enters the pump spaces y through ports 8, 10 in the shaft 2 and passages 11, through which the mixture is delivered, after compression, to ports 28 opening into a reservoir p and a hollow portion of the shaft leading to passages 22, each terminating in a cylinder admission port 16. Scavenging-air, which enters the cylinders through passages 20 and the ports 16, is admitted to the pump spaces x through a port 14 and, after compression, is delivered to the hollow portion of the shaft on the lefthand side of the partition 12 and to the reservoir m. Upon the closing of the admission ports 16, the combustible mixture remaining in a passage 22 is withdrawn through a port 24, which coincides with a port 23 opening into the chamber 9. Simultaneously-compressed air enters the passages 20, 22 through a port 25. Mixture leaking along the shaft is arrested in annular channels 26, 27, which are exhausted by the pumps y. The exhaust ports are controlled by a ring valve 17.
