Abstract

13,926. Crossley, W. J., and Atkinson, J. July 9. Gas and like engines.-A two-stroke cycle engine is provided with two pumps, one g for supplying air through ports c as soon as they are uncovered by the motor piston b to sweep out the exhaust through the valve e, and the other f for supplying gas or a rich non-combustible mixture. The gas is drawn in through the valve i, and the air through a valve in the pipe h close to the admission valve k of the cylinder a. The valve k is opened after, and closed before, the ports c are covered by the piston, so that air from the pump g will clear the gas from the space between the valve k and ports c and prevent waste. The valve k is opened by a tappet n through a distance-piece m controlled by the governor o. A relief valve admits air to the cylinder when expansion proceeds below atmo- spheric pressure. Producer gas may be supplied by the pumps f. The charges may enter through the valve e, and the exhaust escape through ports c.
