Abstract

15,589. Prestwich, J. A. Aug. 1. Gas and explosive-vapour engines.-The motor piston c is ;slightly in advance of the air-pump piston d. A rotary valve l, driven by chain gearing m, admits air to the pumps through ports p, q, and allow it to escape through ports s, r, t to a pipe u. Oil enters a port x in an extension w of the valve from a pipe z, Fig. 3, and is expelled by air from the pump into the pipe u through a pipe 3 and nozzle 4, where it is vaporized by the heat of the compressed air. The oil may be supplied by a pump controlled by the governor. The exhaust valve 6 is operated by a cam 5 on the valve l and levers 7, 8. When gas is used, it may be drawn into the compression cylinder with the air, or forced into the motor cylinder separately. The cylinder is hot enough to insure ignition. Air is forced through a non-return valve 17 from the pump to a reservoir whence it is admitted to the motor through a port 20, Fig. 4, in the valve l and the pipe t for starting, or it may be used for injecting oil into the cylinder. By varying the advance of the motor piston, any degree of compression may be obtained without risk of premature ignition.
