Abstract

244,215. Bailey, R. W., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. Oct. 9, 1924. Addition to 232,278. Four-stroke engines.-In gas or oil power plant as set out in claim 6 of the parent Specification wherein two cylinders have their pistons rigidly connected together, the cylinders being used to generate products of combustion under pressure which are expanded in other cylinders, the products of combustion are wholly removed at the end of each cycle by air at a pressure slightly above that of the products. In Fig. 3 only one cylinder of a pair is shown, the front end 4 being used as a pump. Air or combustible mixture is drawn in through the valve 13 and delivered to the two reservoirs 11, 12<a>, the pressure in the reservoir 12a being higher than in the other reservoir. The delivery to the reservoir 12a is controlled by a valve 14 connected to a piston subjected to the pressure of the products of combustion. An explosion having taken place the valve 10 is opened on the exhaust stroke to allow the products to escape; towards the end of the exhaust stroke or at the commencement of the induction stroke the high pressure air from the reservoir 12a is admitted through the valve 9 to scavenge the cylinder. After the valves 9, 10 are closed charge air is admitted from the reservoir 11, which air is compressed to ignition temperature on the return stroke of the piston. Fuel is injected from the nozzle 7. The valve 12 admitting to the reservoir 11 may be in the cylinder end. Combustible mixture may be compressed into the two reservoirs, or instead of the front ends of the cylinders independent pumps may be used to compress air, mixture or air and gas separately. Stage compressors may be used; or the high pressure air for scavenging could be obtained by trapping a part of the charge air from the power chamber during the compression stroke, the trapped air being led to a chamber in valve communication with the power chamber. Each cylinder may have oppositely moving pistons. According to the Provisional Specification the charge air may be admitted at atmospheric pressure.
