Abstract

15,852. Winand, P. A. N. Aug. 8, 1904, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Gas and like engines; combustion-product engines. -Relates to operating reciprocating engines and turbines for submarine vessels and torpedoes by products of combustion due to the burning of a highly-concentrated fuel in the presence of a highly-oxygenated gaseous substance and a diluent other than air. The substances chosen are such that a maximum amount of useful work may be obtained from a minimum of weight and volume of the combustible, comburant, and diluent. Oxygen obtained from liquid nitric peroxide may be used as a supporter of combustion, and water or liquid ammonia as the diluent. If preferred, the substances may be stored in three separate vessels, or the diluent may be dispensed with, in which case the combustible or comburant or both are supplied to the combustion chamber in excess. It is stated that a mixture of " ammonium nitrate " with sufficient water to render it liquid and " ammonia" may be used. When operating reciprocating engines, the mixture is ignited in the cylinder.
