Abstract
578,261. Ignition devices. ASIATIC PETROLEUM CO., Ltd., LUBBOCK, I., POOLE, H. J., and CROW, A. D. Nov. 7, 1941, No. 14402. [Class 7 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXIII] An ignition device for combustion chambers in which reacting substances, for example a liquid fuel and liquid oxygen, are burned under pressure, the products of combustion being discharged to an engine or a reaction nozzle, comprises a hollow body 1 containing a propellant charge 4, for example, of cordite, having the characteristic of burning at an increasing rate with pressure. The charge is fired by means of a primer 5, for example by electrical means 6, and a discharge nozzle 8 leads to the combustion chamber by way of a straight orifice 10 which creates friction and reduces the gas velocity. The nozzle 8 is preferably formed in a block of refractory material such as graphite, and an insulation 2 of similar material provided in the body 1 as shielded by a metal lining 3.
