Abstract

768,895. Earth-boring blowpipes. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. April 7, 1955 [May 6, 1954], No. 10190/55. Class 68 (1). [Also in Group XI] The fluid-cooled nozzle of an earthboring blowpipe having an internal combustion chamber C for the burning of fluid fuel and oxidant and a flame passage comprising a restricted throat T and a divergent discharge passage D leading to an external orifice is characterized in that the combustion chamber volume and the areas of the throat and external orifice are so proportioned as to provide a ratio of combustion chamber volume to throat area of 1.0 to 5.0 and a ratio of orifice area to throat area of between 1 and 2.5 times the value of the expansion ratio obtained from the equation : wherein: E.R. = expansion ratio. K = ratio of specific heats at constant pressure and at constant volume of the combustion products. P o = chamber pressure (lbs./in.<SP>2</SP>). P m = mouth pressure at orifice (lbs./in.<SP>2</SP>). Specification 657,383 is referred to.
