Abstract

24,937. Cahen, E. D. Dec. 1. Gas and like engines, starting in. Engines with two or more cylinders are started without turning the fly-wheel by charging them with uncompressed charges, which are then ignited. The cylinders are each provided with a relief cock C and an admission cock D, all of which cocks are worked by one lever E. The cylinders are charged with carburetted air by a small pump G and carburettor F, and with a fourcylinder engine one of the pistons will probably be in a position to receive a sufficiently powerful starting impulse. In engines with less than four cylinders, the piston may be brought into a favourable starting position by manipulating the igniting switch and producing a slight explosion in one cylinder. Air may be forced through the ordinary carburettor and admission valve into the cylinder.
