Abstract

Valves.-Inlet and exhaust in a four-strokecycle engine are controlled by co-operating cylindrical slide valves J, K, worked in both directions by the cam-gear shown in Fig. 4, a pair of cams, such as 13, 15 is provided for each valve. The valves are recessed pistons so arranged as to be balanced against axial gas pressure. Admission takes place from the chamber Q through ports 0, the recess U, ports T, the recess M, ports X, and the recess Y. Exhaust occurs, with the valves in the position shown, through ports X, the recess Z, and ports P, to the chamber R. The lowest piston-portion 4 of the outer valve serves to balance the valve against axial pressure during the inlet stroke, when there is pressure in the chamber R, due to the exhaust of another cylinder.
