Abstract

117,487. Howard, H. J. July 16, 1917. Valves; valve-gear. - In a double-acting four-stroke-cycle engine having its cylinders disposed parallel to a central shaft, the pistons carry adjustable rollers which engage both faces of a main driving cam. The heads 19 of the cylinders are surmounted by a chamber 18 containing a mixture inlet passage 14 and an inlet (not shown) for the cooling water. The inlet and exhaust ports 23, 22 respectively may be controlled by any suitable type of valve, those shown in Fig. 1 being slide valves of the type described in Specification 15618/15. The valves are actuated by a cam 11 and a spring- pressed lever 10 which turns alternately about its points of connexion with the valve stems, as fulcra.
