Abstract

112,461. Adams, W. L. Jan. 3, 1917, [Convention date]. Valve-gear.-In an engine having twelve cylinders disposed in the form of a V, the pistons are connected in groups of four to three crank-pins set 120 degrees apart, and in an engine having twenty-four cylinders disposed in four inclined rows, the pistons are connected in groups of eight to crank-pins arranged as in the twelvecylinder engine. Fig. 2 shows a twelve-cylinder engine having four pistons 8 connected to each of the crank-pins 2, 3, 4. A cam-shaft 30 is located between the rows of cylinders and is driven from the crank-shaft through gearing 32, 33, 31. The valve stems are connected to their actuating levers, and the valve ports open into longitudinal inlet and exhaust passages disposed between and outside the cylinder heads, respectively. In an engine having twenty-four cylinders, two cam-shafts are used.
