Abstract

206,196. White, D. G. F., and Neilson, L. W. July 5, 1922. Valves.-In an engine having one or more poppet valves L each controlling both inlet and exhaust, which are further controlled by separate rotary or other valves K, H, the inlet and exhaust ports G, F are formed as close as possible to the port C for the valve L, so as to reduce to a minimum the space which would retain residual gases. The valves H, K are made of D-section as shown, and may be constructed with cooling-vanes w, and also with air scoops w' arranged at one end so as to induce a flow of air through the valves and through gaps in the end bearings of the valves. In multicylinder blocks, the rotary valves for the several cylinders may be arranged parallel to the crank shaft and be integrally constructed; or they may have their axes at right angles to the crank shaft, each valve then serving two adjacent cylinders. Valve gear.-The poppet valve may be actuated by a bell crank engaging a face cam on the end of one of the rotary valves. The two rotary valves H, K may be driven by gear wheels fitted at one end and engaging a gear wheel mounted between them on a vertical shaft.
