Abstract

110,279. Brown, W. F. Feb. 26, 1917. Valves; valve-gear.-The inlet and exhaust ports p, p<1> respectively of a four-stroke-cycle engine are controlled by a pair of reciprocating valves I, E which slide one in the other in a cooled valve-chest a. Charges are admitted to the hollow valve I through a port i in the valvechest and enter the working cylinder when ports m in the valve e register with the ports p and are uncovered by the upper edge of the valve I. The burnt gases escape through a passage e when the ports p<1> are uncovered by the valve E. The valve E, which has a head e<1> making a gas-tight joint with the valve-chest at the downwardlyprojecting flange e<5>, is split vertically at intervals and pressed outwardly by the cylinder gases against the valve-chest. The valves are connected by linkage gear to crank-pins r, r' on a half-speed shaft h. A modified construction is described in which the inlet valve is arranged outside the exhaust valve.
