Abstract

21,941. Crossley, W. J. Oct. 16. Gas and explosive-vapour engines, valves and valve-gear for. The distribution of motor fluid to and from a high-speed four - stroke-cycle internal-combustion engine for a road vehicle is controlled by a pair of oppositely-rotating sleeve valves mounted on opposite sides of the cylinders. In Fig. 1 the inlet valve is shown at B and the exhaust valve at J. Each valve comprises a pair of oppositely-rotating sleeves A, D' and K, L respectively which revolve at one quarter the speed of the crank-shaft. The disposition of the exhaust ports Q, R is such as to establish a direct communication between, each cylinder and its exhaust pipe through the ports M, N, whereas the admission of the motive fluid to the fourcylinder engine shown in Fig. 3 is established through ports F, F<1> which open into the interior of the inner sleeves. Ports H open into the cylinders through ports I. The valve sleeves are driven, separately by screw gearing from opposite ends of the crank - shaft. If preferred, the relative arrangement of the inlet and exhaust ports may be identical. The Provisional Specification refers also to the use of single-sleeve valves.
