Abstract

Valves; valve-gear.-A rotary cylindrical valve for a multicylinder engine comprises a single sleeve or a pair of oppositely-rotating sleeves F, G which surround a stationary cylindrical core E containing inlet and exhaust passages 29, 30, and a water-cooling-chamber 62, 63. As shown in Figs. 5 and 7, each sleeve has three inlet and three exhaust ports for each cylinder, arranged respectively in the planes X X, Y Y, Fig. 5, the sleeves rotating at one-sixth the speed of the crank-shaft. To facilitate adjustment and to take up wear, the core E is split along its length, Fig. 4, and adjusted by grub-screws 71. The inner sleeve G is also split longitudinally, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5. For cooling the valve, water from the casing Q is fed to the chamber 62 of the core and is discharged after traversing the upper chamber 63. Water-cooling may be dispensed with, a current of cooling-air being circulated through the valve, either by a fan or by the ejector action of exhaust gases. The valves are driven from the crank-shaft through toothed gearing.
