Abstract

181,451. Powles, H. S. March 8, 1921. Rotary spherical valves.-A valve 6 controlling the inlet and exhaust of an internal-combustion engine is mounted in a casing 1 formed in two halves having spigot-and-socket engagement at 10 and connected together bv bolted lugs 11 and by nuts 13, 14 having coned portions 16. The valve is formed with ports 19, 18 the former of which is always in communication with a cylinder port 5, while the latter communicates alternately with inlet and exhaust ports. Packing- rings are provided at 20, 21, 22 and cooling-ribs at 17. The valve is formed with a spindle 8 which is driven by bevel-wheels 24, 25, the former of which is adjustable by means of a serrated coned connection 29; or the spindle may be driven by crank-discs and connecting-rods, or by chain gearing.
