Abstract
416,697. Engine valve - gear. NICHOLS; T. W., 63, Capel Road, Forest Gate, London. June 19, 1933, No. 17387. [Class 122 (ii).] In a combined fluid-actuated and mechanical valve-gear for a pump or fluid-pressure motor, wherein a mechanically-operated, flat-slide, cut-off valve functions as an auxiliary distributing-valve to the main-piston valve, the cut-off valve controls the main admission only, the main exhaust being controlled by the main piston valve. A false exhaust port is arranged in the cut-off valve face to effect balance,and the ports are arranged symmetrically, so that the valve may be inserted upside down without affecting the working of the pump or motor. The steam ports a<3> are controlled by the cut-off valve b, and the exhaust ports a<5> by the main valve a<1>. Steam at cylinder pressure is supplied to ports h, h<1> in the cut-off valve seat through passages e, f<1> ,e<1>, e<2>, f<2>. Auxiliary steam ports c<1>, c<2> lead to the ends of the main-valve chamber, and ports d<1>, d<2>, which function as steam and exhaust ports, also connect the ends of the valve chamber with the seat in the casing. These ports are controlled by the ports h<1>, h<2>, and the ports d<1>, d<2> are also controlled by exhaust ports p<1>, p<2>, which communicate with a central cavity through a port n designed to effect balance and which is connected to the main exhaust by a port m. The pressure of steam in the ports h, h<1> balances the pressure on the auxiliary piston g. Steam to complete the stroke of the main piston is supplied to the cylinder after the ports a<3> have been closed by the valve b. This is effected through a groove r in valve b and recess l in disc g which communicates with supply ports v<1>, v<2> in valve b. The steam may be supplied to the grooves, h, h<1> through a dual-acting steam stop valve of the kind described in Specification 3023/15, [Class 122 (ii)].
