Abstract
518,867. Valves. TOWLER, J. M., and TOWLER, F. H. June 15, 1938, No. 20973. [Class 135] Relates to hydraulic control valves of the kind in which a piston b has a reduced portion b<1> adapted to connect a central supply chamber d in the valve casing with either of two outer chambers e, f communicating with hydraulic cylinders, the piston having means at its ends for connecting the other outer chamber to exhaust. According to the invention, passages at the ends of the piston, which lead to exhaust, are so constructed that they only become fully open to the outer chambers when the piston has received a relatively long movement, so that the rate of exhaust increases gradually to a maximum. The passages in the piston may be in the form of helical grooves j, Fig. 1, which preferably increase in cross-sectional area towards the ends of the valve, or series of small apertures l, Fig. 2, leading to the hollow interior of the piston. The grooves or the apertures may be supplemented by reduced portions n at the ends of the piston.
