Abstract
301,761. Macdonald, R. M. Aug. 4, 1927. Fluid - friction vibration - dampers.-In a double acting cylinder and piston device the area of the fluid transfer openings is diminished in proportion to the strength of shock. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, opposite ends of the cylinders are connected by ports c<1>, c<2> and a passage g in an auxiliary piston e. Springs f tend to retain the piston e in its central position from which it is displaced by excess pressure at either end of the main cylinder and when so disposed one of the conical needle valves h<1>, h<2> reduces the effective area of the passage g, the amount of reduction depending upon the pressure. Modified constructions are described which may form the piston or may be disposed in the piston or in a transfer passage in the cylinder wall.
