Abstract
315,917. Newton, N. B. April 21, 1928. Fluid-friction vibration-dampers more particularly of the cylinder- and-piston type described in Specification 296,897, are constructed with a transfer passage within the cylinder and including one or more adjustable valves or jets in the outer cylinder head for controlling the flow through the passage. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the piston a working in the cylinder b separates two compression chambers between which is arranged a transfer passage consisting of a tube n fixed to the cylinder head and extending into the hollow piston rod e. The tube n fits a bush k in the piston and its upper end communicates with the upper compression chamber through the hollow piston rod and passage e<3> in the walls thereof. The lower end of the tube n is connected to the lower compression chamber through a passage, the area of which may be varied by an adjustable needle valve p. In a modification, the tube n passes up through the piston towards one side of the cylinder. Two transfer passages may be provided each having a one-way valve independently adjustable so that the movement in either direction may be regulated independently of the other.
