Buffers. - In a hydraulic shock-absorbing device, such as a railway vehicle buffer, two sets of passages are provided for the escape of liquid from a containing chamber k during the inward movement of a piston b, one set of passages h being permanently open and, in known manner, increasing in area towards the ends i nearer to the piston b in its normal position and accommodating entirely the flow of liquid when smaller shocks are absorbed, while the second set of passages f, arranged, e.g., in the piston b, are closed by a spring-loaded valve or plate g and are opened only when more violent shocks are encountered and a predetermined maximum pressure in the chamber k is reached, the valves preventing such pressure from being exceeded. In the construction shown, the invention is applied to a railway vehicle buffer in which the piston b is mounted on a piston rod c guided in stuffing-boxes m at the ends of the liquid cylinder a and having a head d maintained in contact with the plunger head l by a volute spring e.
